Balela – Chickpea and Black Bean Salad

Balela - Chickpea and black bean salad_featured

Here is a dish that that is tangy, with a hint of spice and everything nice. You could have this as a salad or could make for a side dish too. This recipe is inspired from snack that i purchased at costco (pita pal organic balela). We absolutely love it and I feel its a lot more cost effective to make it at home.

Balela is a middle eastern dish and its brings forward a lot of the flavors from the area. You can experiment with this dish with the spices of your choice too to bring in a new twist. Here is the recipe that I love and I would encourage you to make it your own!

Made balela salad, with all ingredients from your recipe except sumac. Mine somewhat bland, not spicy like the Pita Pal version. Do you think if I add sumac it will make a big difference? Thanks

Hi Gloria, I’m so sorry I should have got back to you earlier and the recipe didn’t satisfy you as is. Sumac is a nice addition to a Mediterranean dish and it definitely enhances the flavor. However, that will not help blandness in balela. Have u tried readjusting seasoning as per your taste? and add few more drops on lemon juice until it suits your taste.

My balela salad is bland, did not add the sumac. Will that make a significant difference?

Adding a little finely minced jalapeno pepper gives it a bit more of a kick like the costco version has. One medium sized jalapeno, seeds removed, and really finely minced. Sumac will just add a little more citrusy tang and some smokey woody flavors.

  4. Wow, thank you so much! I found this while searching for a recipe online after our Costco stopped carrying it. Also, your photography is stunningly gorgeous!
